017. PLAY

What’s the point if we can’t have fun?

I've heard that there are two things that wake us up to life: pain and beauty. But I would add another to that list -- play.

Sometimes viewed as tone deaf or useless, play is apparently fundamental to life. It is found in just about every species including ants.

Moreover, play is a critical aspect of creative teams, the pursuit of wisdom, and even thriving societies. In the early part of the 20th Century, cultural theorist Johan Huizenga laid out in his book Homo Ludens how play is pre-cultural and an essential aspect of a thriving social order.

So I'm wondering, what is play? What role does play (well...) play in leadership today? How might we integrate it more fully in the way we engage with our work? How might play be a lens through which we view a thriving society and culture?
